A slow-moving storm dumped nearly 6 inches of rain in some part of Alabama Wednesday morning, overwhelming the Birmingham area with floods that prompted more than 40 water rescues, according to officials.
Video shows a deer tentatively escaping floodwaters encroaching on a wooded residential area in Hoover, a suburb of Birmingham. It has never flooded this much, said Dr. Joshua C. Klapow, who recorded the video and shared it to Twitter. This is crazy.
The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings early Wednesday for large parts of central Alabama. A flood watch remains in effect for parts of central Alabama through 1 a.m. Thursday.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, speaking to the press Wednesday, said our system was overwhelmed.
We did have 42 water rescues this morning, said Birmingham Fire Chief Cory D. Moon. That is a lot of water rescues, especially in such a short amount of time.
