Severe Flooding Sees Residents Wading Through Water in Richmond, VT Neighborhoods

More rain is in store for Vermont this week, after torrential rains brought catastrophic flooding across the state on Monday.
A video shared by Twitter user @mattalltradesb shows a resident wading through waist-high floodwaters Tuesday in Richmond, on the Winooski River southeast of Burlington.
Numerous flash flood warnings were in effect across the state on Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Some areas saw as much as 9 inches of rain. Richmond remained under a flood warning until 4:20 a.m. Thursday.
With more thunderstorms and heavy rain in the forecast through the end of the week, another flood watch was issued for Richmond from 2 p.m. Thursday until 2 a.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
The Winooski River crested at 21.35 feet early Tuesday at the Montpelier gauge, where the major flood stage is 17.5 feet, the agency said. The capital city was under a flash flood warning until 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, and remained under a flood warning until 2:45 p.m., the agency said.
Another flood watch was issued for Montpelier from 2 p.m. Thursday until 2 a.m. Friday, the agency said.
Gov. Phil Scott said 11 swift water rescue teams were deployed throughout the state Sunday evening in preparation for Mondays floods, and more were deployed Monday. On Tuesday morning, President Joe Biden approved Scotts request for an emergency declaration in the state, authorizing federal emergency assistance.
Although the rain eased Tuesday, many roads remained impassable, and authorities continued to advise residents and visitors to avoid walking or driving in floodwaters, which can obscure washouts, debris and other dangers.
Floodwaters continued to recede Wednesday, but another round of heavy rain is in store for some parts of the state. Showers and thunderstorms remain in the forecast through the end of the week, according to the National Weather Service.
