State and federal rescue workers in Brazil on Tuesday continued to search for the missing after floods led to at least 91 confirmed deaths, according to Pernambuco state authorities. Heavy rains last week led to landslides on Friday that destroyed hillside homes. Parts of the state’s capital, Recife, and nearby Jaboatao dos Guararapes were submerged in water. A resident of Jaboatao dos Guararapes captured a video on May 28 that shows people boating and swimming along a flooded street. Pernambuco’s civil defense authority said the flooding had displaced 5,000 people. The Recife metropolitan area, which has a population of about 3.7 million, sits at the delta of three rivers, and was classified by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as especially vulnerable. President Jair Bolsonaro flew over the region on Monday, and told reporters the ground was too soaked to land the helicopter.
