Video shows the Coastal Fire devouring multimillion-dollar estates in the Coronado Pointe gated community in Orange County, California, on Wednesday May 11.
The fast-moving brush fire erupted Wednesday afternoon in the Laguna Niguel area, near the South Orange County Wastewater Authority’s Coastal Treatment Plant. Aided by winds blowing in from the ocean, the fire quickly burned uphill along the Aliso Summit Trail, toward Coronado Pointe.
Mandatory evacuations were issued for the immediate areas, with additional voluntary evacuations.
As of early Thursday morning, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, known as Cal Fire, reported Coastal Fire was estimated at 195 acres burned with zero containment.
At least 20 homes have been destroyed so far.
While the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, Southern California Edison notified the California Public Utilities Commission Wednesday night that our information reflects circuit activity occurring close in time to the reported time of the fire. Our investigation is ongoing.
Public utility companies are required to notify the state in the event their equipment may be involved in a wildfire incident.
