Burst of Upward-Moving Lightning Captured on Video in Lawrence, KS

### A burst of upward-moving lightning was captured on video by KSNT meteorologist Ryan Matoush Tuesday night in Lawrence, Kansas, as storms swept through the state. Severe storms knocked out power in central and northeast Kansas May 17 and lasted overnight. According to the National Weather Service, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), upward discharges almost always occur from towers, tall buildings or mountain tops. According to the NOAAs National Severe Storms Laboratory, natural lightning starts in the cloud and travels to the ground, while upward lightning is artificially initiated or triggered. Upward lightning usually occurs after a natural lightning flash disrupts the electric field, though it can sometimes be self-triggered, usually in a windy winter storm, the laboratory says. ###
